Orange Memorial Park Aquatic Center

Located in San Mateo County, The City of South San Francisco proudly remains The Industrial City, a reflection of its steel mill and ship building past, redefined to reflect the innovative, entrepreneurial, and industrious spirit which has made South San Francisco the Biotech Capital of the World, with 217 active biotech companies and growing. The City of South San Francisco is proud of its diversity with over 80% of households identifying as households of color and over 60% of households speaking a language other than English at home. South San Francisco enjoys a high quality of life with an extensive public parks system, active library and learning programming and a dynamic, engaged community making South San Francisco a great place to live, learn, work and play. The existing Orange Pool is located within Orange Memorial Park and is the only public swimming pool in the community. It is used by residents, non-residents, students, children, and adults for a variety of aquatic classes, events and recreational swimming activities. After nearly a half-century of year-round use, Orange Pool has exceeded its anticipated service life and is long overdue for significant renovation or replacement. Despite the deteriorated condition of the municipal indoor swim facility, high attendance at Orange Pool persists. The facility is frequently at full capacity – a situation that is likely to intensify as the City’s and adjoining communities’ populations increase in the coming decades. The current confluence of population growth and Orange Pool’s aging condition presents the City of South San Francisco with an opportunity to conceive of a new facility that is tailored to the specific needs of its various community and aquatic user groups. The purpose of this solicitation for planning and design services is to develop design alternatives, specific cost estimates, construction documentation and construction observation for development of a new Aquatic Center within the $34 million total project budget. The new Aquatic Center shall include two indoor pools; a warmer pool for therapy and classes and a cooler lap pool and explore reuse of the exiting facility footprint. The facility is intended to be constructed adjacent to the existing Orange Pool to allow for continued operation of the existing facility throughout construction of the new facility. The full project will include the demolition of the existing pool facility and addition of a new parking lot. The new Aquatic Center is planned to be located at the corner of Tennis Drive and West Orange Avenue at Orange Memorial Park.
