Design Services for 100-Acre Wood Bike Course Improvements
City of Tucson / Parks and Recreation
Description
The 100-Acre Wood bike park was originally identified in the 2010 Pima Regional Trail Master Plan that was adopted by Tucson Mayor and Council. It was known as trails parks 011 (TP011 Golf Links). This project gained momentum in 2014 when the David Monthan Air Force Base (DMAFB) excess parcel became a dumping ground. The City of Tucson entered a 5-year lease with DMAFB beginning in November 2016 to begin some initial trail development. In 2022 the City and DMAFB entered into a 20-year right-of-way easement allowing the City to further seek grants to build the trails. The Sonoran Desert Mountain Bike (SDMB) club built some trails on the site while a master plan was being developed. The master plan was adopted by Tucson Mayor and Council in May 2018. The master plan included a detailed phase 1 site development plan prepared by Hilride Professional Development Group. In early 2020, SDMB submitted a grant request to the Trek Foundation for trail development dollars for the phase 1 Hilride plan. The Trek Foundation contacted Tucson P&R to confirm if the City was interested in trying to match the Trek Foundation grant if awarded. The City agreed to pursue other grants and funding opportunities to maximize the Trek Foundation grant of $116,000. In December 2023 the City received a Heritage Fund Grant from Arizona State Parks and Trails to help match the Trek Foundation grant. The City desires to select a qualified firm to provide turn-key design and permitting of an all-natural trail and mountain bike park system for 100-Acre Wood.
