Groupable Ten-Frame Math Kits
tusd1 / School Improvement
Description
Students, Native American Students, Hispanic Students, and Economically Disadvantaged Students. It is the intention of TUSD to procure groupable Ten Frame, Count-to-1000 Tile Kits with guidebooks corresponding to grade levels in grades K-1, 2-3, 4-5, and K-5, for student use, in schools carrying the TSI label. The purpose of these kits: So that students can physically and visually use and understand the structure of the entire base-ten system, we intend to purchase groupable and ungroupable ten-frame tiles so that students can understand place-value, without having to trade out tiles. They can simply use a cover-tile to group, for example, ten “ones” into one “ten.” Similarly, they can un-group the tiles to turn the “ten” into ten “ones” without having to trade any tiles. The tiles can be grouped up to ten, and then also grouped from, “ten” to, “one-hundred,” and from, “one-hundred,” to, “one-thousand.” The tiles should be proportionate so that they be added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided, as well as representing whole and partial numbers. This will support students in understanding the entire base-ten system, place value, numeric operations, decimals, fractions, as they will be able to manipulate wholes and parts that are also representative of the symbolic parts of ones, tens, hundreds, and one thousands.
