23-B-49SR: Marine Science Center Turtle Canopy

volusia / Purchasing and Contracts

Description

The Marine Science Center (MSC) opened in 2002 and has since played an important part in rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing many species of sea turtles and birds, many of which are endangered. Combining the rehabilitation hospitals with an exhibit gallery and educational programs allows the MSC to teach its visitors about living in harmony with our environment and how each one of us can help conserve our resources through environmental stewardship. The existing main turtle hospital is covered with a wood frame/ metal roof structure. Next to the main turtle hospital is an outdoor turtle tank hospital covered by a wood post/ beam/ screen trellis system. The construction of the new Marine Science Center Turtle Tank Canopy shall include the removal and replacement of the trellis structure with a new metal roof/ wood frame canopy. The metal roof shall match the main building roof and have polycarbonate skylights. The project will improve the standard of care provided at the turtle hospital. Scope of Work: Volusia County is seeking the services of a State of Florida Certified General or Building Contractor to provide permitting and construction services for a single-story wood frame/ metal roof with skylights canopy structure. The new open air, canopy structure shall be constructed at existing turtle tank slab, adjacent to the main turtle hospital per plans and specifications. The existing tanks, life support system and related piping will be removed/ relocated by the County prior to construction. The turtle hospital is a part of the main Marine Science Center building located at 100 Lighthouse Drive, Ponce Inlet, Florida. Work is generally described to include, but is not limited to, demolition of wood frame screened trellis structure, portions of the existing slab to facilitate new footings and demolition of existing fencing. The work is also described to include cast-in-place concrete, wood structural framing, standing seam metal roofing, flashing, skylights, electrical, lighting, hose bibs, chain link fencing and swing gate system.
