Description

The City of South San Francisco has decommissioned the former Main Library and replaced it with the recently opened Library and Parks and Recreation Building at 901 Civic Campus Way. The former Main Library is now closed and unoccupied. While the City of South San Francisco continues to study City-operated programs at this site, staff also wishes to seek qualified private and non-profit partners. The City is seeking innovative, community-oriented service providers to submit a proposal for operating within the former Main Library building. The preference is for a private preschool operator or similar school operator. The proposal could be for a single user or a combination of users, however – the ideal candidate will serve the local population, operate and maintain the building, and function as a master lessee. The City is open to creative proposals. The former Main Library is described below to help guide proposals: Total Square Footage – Approximately 30,000 SF and two (2) stories built in 1966 with a functioning elevator Parking - 87 parking spaces and 4 accessible spaces Private and public restrooms on both floors; however, only the main floor has ADA accessible restrooms. There is air conditioning in the building’s lower floor only and window ventilation on the main/ground floor level. A facility condition assessment was conducted in 2015 that identifies known maintenance needs. A copy of the report is available as Attachment 1. The City of South San Francisco previously analyzed options for converting the former Main Library into a preschool center. This remains a priority interest of the City Council. A feasibility study from 2019 is included as Attachment 2 for any interested proposers as a reference. There is an existing wireless facility in the adjacent parking lot, which will continue to operate under a current lease agreement.
